Hike to John Rock - Pisgah Center

Where: The trailhead is at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, adjacent to the fish hatchery in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard.

Length: Four miles for an out-and-back hike, or a 5-mile loop.

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous.

Highlights: The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, next to the fish hatchery, will offer a guided hike to John Rock on Feb. 28. This popular winter hike fills up quickly, so beat the crowd and take your own hike.

The highlight is the summit of John Rock, at 3,300 feet of elevation, which offers a sweeping view of the Davidson River Valley and of Looking Glass Rock. Bring lots of water for the uphill climb and a snack to enjoy on the summit. The hike can be done as an out-and-back or made longer by hiking a loop.

Trail maps are available at the education center, which is open daily except Sunday, or at the Pisgah District office of the U.S. Forest Service on U.S. 276.
